Simple “Pre Breakfast” Protein Shake

by Eva @ Committed2Nutrition on September 29, 2012

Hey friends!

Happy Saturday!

I have been getting some emails asking what is in my protein shake so I thought I’d do a little post to show Thursday’s shake.  This is the shake I eat BEFORE breakfast. I don’t even know what I consider it – “pre breakfast shake”? I drink this shake on my car ride to work, and then when I get to work I eat my oatbran-greek yogurt-peanut butter-and-whatever-fix-in’s-I-want as my main breakfast.

Plus drinking a shake in the morning is a great way to get more liquid early in the day AND more calories. Teaching 4-5 Zumba classes per week, it’s hard to keep up with the caloric demands my body needs. I sound so obnoxious, I know, but being honest.

Thursday morning I was in the mood for a “mocha” type flavor so I added 16 oz of COLD water, 8 oz of decaf iced coffee I keep in a pitcher in the fridge, and 4 ice cubes. Other times I use a mix of unsweetened almond milk and water. I use 24oz to make a huge cup full and to make sure I am getting in more water since I suck at drinking it as the day goes on.

I add a scoop of vanilla protein powder to the NINJA.

I have to add sweetness to it; it’s the only way I feel it actually tastes GOOD. So I add cocoa bean extract, vanilla stevia (about a full dropper of each), and then just a dash of banana extract. Oh almost forgot – two huge spoonfuls of cocoa powder. That is KEY!

You can really taste the banana and chocolate.

This whole shake doesn’t fit into the cup, so I have to suck down a lot of it first in order to fit in the cup – but I LOVE it.

Recap:

Ingredients:

  • 24 oz of your choice of liquid
  • 4 ice cubes
  • 1 full scoop of vanilla protein powder (I use whey or sun warrior)
  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
  • dropper of vanilla stevia (NuNaturals)
  • dropper of cocoa bean extract (NuNaturals)
  • dash of banana extract

Directions:

BLEND ALL TOGETHER!

That’s it. So simple. A perfect hold-me-over until I can eat my real breakfast at work.

Now I am off to finish my playlist for this morning’s Zumba class at LA Fitness.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Questions:

What is your favorite protein shake combo?

Do you eat a “pre-breakfast” like I do?

What are you up to this weekend? pumpkin picking?!

I have a few favorite combos… One is chocolate protein powder, PB2, ice, banana, and vanilla extract. Another is chocolate protein powder, frozen raspberries, ice, and almond butter. I do an all fruit/veggie one too – grapes, pineapple, spinach, apple, pear, banana, and berries. Looks gross, tastes AMAZING! :)

Missing class today – you guys are probably sweating up a storm right about now! I just needed to take a day and rest before my body totally revolts! This cold is not fun, and I don’t want it to get any worse! Taking my vitamin C and drinking tea with honey!!

YUM! I don’t eat a pre-breakfast… I’m more of a post-breakfast kind of gal! haha Seriously though I eat breakfast after I workout and then I usually have something else before lunch! Have a lovely weekend, love!

I’ve always found the breakfast shake a great way to start my morning! Easy to digest and it allows me to get my work done w/out thinking about food all morning! Being on a paleo-style diet I would however change the protein source :) While respecting your dietary choices of course!
