Zumba® Fitness has become one of the biggest passions in my life (other than my boyfriend Nick, yes I am so cheesy). I am completely 100% obessed with teaching it and I find myself talking about it with my friends, boyfriend, family, etc. probably a tad too much, sorry guys! I just can’t help it It inspires me, it pushes me to work harder & be a better person, and I feel the best I’ve ever felt in my life. I get paid to teach something I love doing so much? Someone please pinch me, because this does not seem like real life.
I became licensed to teach in March 2011 while I was still living in Boston (I now live back in CT thankfully!!). Actually, living in Boston is what inspired me to teach.
I was living a very unfulfilling life and needed something more to do that I was passionate about. Boston = not a good place for me and was some of the darkest periods of my life.
Anyway….since I was a dancer all through grade school and high school, and started to hear more and more about Zumba®, I started to think “oh hey, I can teach this!”. I took several classes in CT prior to moving, but then in Boston took a class at the Boston Sports Club. I thought the class was fun, intense, and energetic. I remember barely getting through 20 minutes of it! I asked the instructor afterwards if the endurance will come and she assured me that I will build it up the more I did Zumba.
Fast forward a few months, and I was on my way to the Zumba® Instructor Training with Ann Saldi in New Hampshire. A one day course is all it took to be licensed to teach.
It was a great day and I learned 4 rhythms I use in my classes: Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, and Reggaeton. I love every single one! I have now been officially teaching for almost a year and a half – time flies!
I teach 4-5 classes per week and each class is one full hour. I push my class through 16 songs! My style is very “dance”, but I do incorporate some fitness style moves like punches, lunges, and squats so we get some toning in I also do not like to stop in between songs. My playlist is set and ready to go before every class. I want to work myself and my class hard, and I have found that when a class is stopped between each song, students tend to lose momentum. But that is just my personal opinion; everyone is different.
So let’s go burn some calories and have a great time doing it – like Zumba® says, “Ditch the work out and join the party!” – and that is exactly how I feel about it. Looking forward to teaching my next class – I live and breathe for this!
